BVEL vs Megilla
Here I go again... I've been recently going back and forth between the toros (Buena Vista EL & Megilla) and I'm finding them really close! I have a hard time distinguishing one from the other. There may be minor differences but if I was blindfolded, I wouldn't know which was which! Maybe the Megilla improved just a bit from when they first came out. I don't know. I believe Johnny Bluz mentioned the latest Megilla wrappers were a little darker now than when they came out. Very close to the BVEL wrapper. Also they average a couple of bucks less than BVEL! Both are great deals IMHO! I'm likening them both. Bravo CP and RP

I'm smoking my way through a ten cigar Raymond Pages Sampler. I had great expectations for this cigar. Good draw, good ash, good burn and handsome looking. CP describes this as a medium+ stick; I thought it struggled to get to medium. Nothing much in the flavor, complexity dept. Nothing offensive, just nothing happening. A little spice. The cigar had about 5 days in my humidor before smoking. The wrapper cracked in three different places at about the same time in the first 1/3 despite very careful handling. Third crack was right in front of the band, and wasn't burned off until I was in in the last third. With the Berserker, Record Bond LE, LOMK, and Penn Standard remaining to try, I wanted to love this one, but it didn't deliver.

∆∆ "World class cigar - I love them"
I bought the Short Gordos, Robustos, and Toro. I'm smoking a Robusto as I write this.
These have a really great looking wrapper covering a magnificent blend of filler leaf and the binder. They're rolled as good or better than any cigar on the market today at any price. They are rock solid in the hand and very uniform. The pre light aroma is as fragrant as I've ever experienced. I get a ton of barnyard with nice nuances of both sweet wild flowers and fresh cedar.
Upon lighting, I'm initially hit with a generous amount of peppery spice, some sweet baking spices, and a bit of cedar. Everything right from the start comes together just about perfectly. Not too much of any one flavor, just enough of all of the above to make me a happy camper. The first inch is slightly north of medium bodied.
The draw, burn, and ash are impeccable. The ash feels like it never wants to leave the cigar. It's almost pure white in color and solid. This is a theme in many of the Raymond Pages made cigars I've smoked.
As I smoked this one, the flavors pickup as does the body. Past the half way mark, I'm saying medium plus bodied with those same great flavors only now they're more pronounced. I'm really amazed at how well balanced this cigar is. The finish is nice and doesn't linger too long. I appreciate that about this cigar. There's something quite special about smoking a BVEL. I say this because I want to reach for another the minute I finish one.
I knew the very first time I tried these they were very special. As a long time cigar smoker who smoked way too many cigars every single day, you know when you've hit a Nirvana type cigar. I like these more than the LOMK. (ducking) They are one of those cigars that checks every box for me. The Short Gordos are slightly less tasty due to their girth. The big Toro is my favorite in the line. It's got so much flavor, it's the Mayor of Flavor Town. Unfortunately, my batch of Toros also had wrapper issues. They would crack in cigar after cigar. That was very disappointing to say the least. Someone at CP looked into this for me. It was a one off and very isolated issue. It wasn't a wide spread issue by any means, just the luck of the draw for me. Being hand made, this can and does happen every so often with almost every brand of cigars I've smoked over the decades. Luckily, the other two sizes I bought have been flawless all around.
I very highly recommend this cigar to anyone who enjoys medium plus bodied stuff. This cigar is as at home with morning coffee as it is after a huge steak dinner.
I liken it to a more flavorful version of the H Upmann by AJ which is a fantastic cigar as well. This BVEL, The Record Bond EL, The Penn Standard, and The LOMK are all world class cigars IMO. Pages has a great ability to blend his leaf to get the most out of them. The combination of tobaccos he used in each blend are something I've never experienced in my 40 years of smoking cigars. He manages to derive the most flavor out of each type of leaf and then blends them into some of the tastiest cigars I've ever smoked. Everything is in balance. Not too much or too little of any one flavor imo. I look forward to any and all of his upcoming blends. This is a young guy to have on your radar. My taste buds are telling me he's really hitting it outta the park. Score: A rock solid 95

My current Raymond Pages list
OK, I've tried some of the Raymond Pages sticks and have come to the conclusion that none rate over 4 stars IMHO. Overall considering the pricing, they are all worth a taste or 2. Nothing was less than 3 stars for me. I'm planning on buying most again, when looking for specials etc. Here goes... Buena Vista 4 stars, Record Bond Edicion Limitada, BDL - Liga 5 Maduro, BDL - Liga 12 Habano, Last of My Kind, Megilla 3 1/2 stars. Hoofty, Record Bond, Penn Standard, Some of the Ray Pages made Graycliffs are mostly 3 star cigars. All quite smokable and I generally find a couple in my rotations. Considering the build and smoking quality along with the RP flavor characteristics of his cigars and CP's great pricings, they are all worth a shot at least! Well, that's my 2 cents.

Buena Vista EL Toro
Smoking my first Buena Vista EL Toro as I type. Fresh OTT. Initial impressions, little tightish on the draw right at the cap. Cut an extra 3/16" off and we're in business. First puff after a proper light yields some light peppery spice, a hint of maple syrup, some woody flavors, and light hay.Burn is very decent. At an inch + in, it remains the same flavor wise. The ash is nice man, almost white and solid as a fricken rock. This one seems to have some great potential. I'm looking forward to trying another in a month after its had some time to settle in. Medium to full, nice flavors, could be a winnah!!!!!! I only bot me a 5er, I should have picked up a 50 pak dangit. Tell young Ray to keep up the LIGERO, it's good for the soul."

Good Cigar!
OK, I've smoked 2 of the toro largas from a 5 pack I received and I like em so far. The other Raymond Pages cigars I've smoked so far have all been good construction, draw and burn etc. Some are better tasting than others but all have been great enough to smoke again for sure! I feel there are similarities in his cigars with that of A.J.Fernandez produced smokes. His blending of flavors is his own but the overall build and performance qualities are like an A.J. stick. Probably due to all the time he has spent working for A.J. in the past. So far, I'm thinking this is my favorite blend but I'm hoping to do some more research to find a fuller bodied offering from this guy. There are at least 3 or 4 blends I'm liking so far for sure. Keep em coming!
